Blackhawks 2, Hurricanes 1

This was the definition of a goalie win as the Hurricanes out-worked the Blackhawks all night. Despite getting out-shot 19-9 in the first the Hawks went into the first overtime with a 1-0 lead. It was Jonathan Toews with the goal off a great pass from Hossa 12:13 in. The shot disparity was smaller in the second, though once again, the Hurricanes got the better of the action. Artemi Panarin expanded the lead to 2 on a power play just under thirteen-and-a-half minutes into the period. Toward the end of the period, the Hurricanes got several great looks and were finally able to get one in with only five seconds left on the clock. Shots were nearly even in the third, though it still looked like the Hurricanes were getting the better of the action. Scott Darling stood tall, though, and preserved the lead to give the Blackhawks the win.
A few things
- Spencer Abbott and Gustav Forsling were sent down to Rockford earlier in the day. In the latter case, the Hawks wanted to get him consistent playing time, but were unable to send him to the AHL prior to December 1; he would have gone back to Sweden instead.
- Scott Darling’s performance really can’t be understated, especially considering the lack of help he got from his defense at times. He’s been very good when called into action this season; the Hawks may have some thinking to do this off-season about the future of the goalie position, considering Darling would likely be cheaper to keep around than Corey Crawford and is younger than Crow.
