Blackhawks 3, Canucks 1 – Recap

Thursday night, the Hawks were on the West Side, taking on the Vancouver Canucks. The Hawks struck first 6:51 into the game when a great shift by the fourth line ended with Teuvo Teräväinen lighting the lamp for his fourth NHL goal of the season. The Canucks would get a chance to tie the game on a power play 12:14 into the game after Antoine Vermette was sent off for a high stick on Luca Sbisa. Vermette’s high stick drew blood, so the Canucks would get four minutes on the man advantage. We would go to 4-on-4 just over a minute-and-a-half later after Alex Burrows was sent off for hooking Johnny Oduya. Neither team would score on the 4-on-4, and the Hawks would be able to kill off the 29 seconds remaining from the Vermette penalty. The Canucks would tie the game 18:46 into the period when Derek Dorsett beat Corey Crawford after a terrible play by Michal Roszival. This would be the final goal scored in the period, and after twenty, the game was tied at 1.

The Hawks would get their first power play of the game 5:17 into the second period when Bo Horvat was sent off for boarding Marcus Kruger. The Hawks never really got anything going on the power play and were unable to convert. Ten seconds after the Hawks’ power play ended, the Canucks would get one after the Haws had too many men on the ice. The Hawks would be able to kill off the penalty. The Hawks would get another power play just under eleven-and-a-half minutes into the period after Alexander Edler was sent off for tripping Patrick Sharp. This power play would be a little more organized than the previous one, but did not generate any more scoring chances. The Canucks killed it off and the game remained tied at one. Neither team would score for the rest of the period, and after two periods, the score was 1-1.

The Hawks would go to the power play 2:31 into the third, the result of the Canucks having too many men on the ice. The Hawks would get a couple nice looks, but no goals. The Hawks would take the lead 8:04 into the period when Johnny Oduya’s shot was tipped by Marian Hossa, hit the crossbar, and then, once it came back down to the ice, tipped past Eddie Lack by Jonathan Toews. They would expand the lead to 3-1 on a breakaway goal by Kruger 10:31 into the period. The score would hold, even after Vancouver brought on the extra attacker, and the Hawks won 3-1, and clinched a playoff berth.

My picks for 3 stars:

★★★ Johnny Oduya, D, CHI (1 A)

★★ Teuvo Teräväinen, F, CHI (1 G)

★ Marcus Kruger, C, CHI (1 G, 1 A)
