Blackhawks 3, Devils 2 (OT) – Recap

tshirt-ad

The Blackhawks got off to a slow start and fell behind early on yet another power play goal allowed. After the first intermission, the team got things in gear. The Hawks scored a power play goal of their own in the second to tie the game; that tally from Artemi Panarin would be the only goal from either side in the period. The Hawks fell behind early in the third when John Moore scored for New Jersey. The Hawks would play well in the third, but their efforts weren’t yielding goals. With just under six minutes to play, Vernon Fiddler caught Patrick Kane with a high stick that drew blood and the Hawks would get four minutes of power play time. After a good chunk of that passed without a goal, Q pulled Corey Crawford in favor of the extra attacker and Marian Hossa lit the lamp shortly after. Both teams would have cracks at a go-ahead goal, but neither side would get one, and we would go to overtime. Artem Anisimov would give the Hawks the extra point and their first road victory of the year just over a minute in, taking advantage of a gassed Taylor Hall.

A few things

  • After yielding a goal late in the first penalty kill, the unit tightened up and killed off the other three penalties they would take. And the one PP goal they did give up wasn’t because of anything dumb the Hawks did. I’m not ready to call the unit fixed just yet, but it’s certainly trending in a positive direction.
  • I’d like to see Vinnie Hinostroza back in the lineup, preferably for Tootoo. I’d go 14-19-64 / 72-15-88 / 8-16-81 / 38-70-48. You could bench Rasmussen instead and I wouldn’t complain much about it, but right now, I think I’d value the ability to contribute on defense over a the ability to punch people.
  • This team has got to start putting together three good periods. In a couple of the first games, they’d score early, then take their foot off the gas. The last couple, they’ve come out sluggish and then had to battle back.

My picks for 3 stars

★★★ P.A. Parenteau, RW, NJD (1 G)

★★ Artem Anisimov, C, CHI (1 G (GWG))

★ Artemi Panarin, LW, CHI (1 G)
