Blackhawks 3, Hurricanes 1 – Recap

Monday night, the Hawks were at the PNC Arena in Raleigh to take on the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hawks got out to a good start and controlled the action early before Marcus Kruger was sent off for holding Elias Lindholm 1:39 into the game. The Hawks would be able to kill off the penalty. Following the successful penalty kill, the Hawks picked up right where they left off and, once again, controlled the action. The Hawks would get the game’s first goal 7:48 in when Andrew Shaw got one past Anton Khudobin. The Hawks would score again 1:19 later on a goal by Patrick Sharp. The team scored on two of their first three shots. The Hawks would control the action for the rest of the period, but would be unable to score again, and after twenty, the Hawks led 2-0.

The second period was very different from the first, as the Hurricanes controlled the action. The Hurricanes would cut the Hawks’ lead to one 3:54 into the second on a goal by Victor Rask. The Hurricanes would test Corey Crawford for the rest of the period, getting eighteen shots on goal to the Hawks’ six. However, only that one shot by Rask would find the back of the net. After two periods, the Hawks led 2-1.

The Hawks played better in the third period, getting more chances, but for the most part, Carolina still controlled the action. There would be no penalties for the second straight period, and nobody would score until Andrew Shaw scored his second goal of the night with 40 seconds remaining. This goal was an empty-netter, as the Hurricanes had pulled Khudobin in favor of the extra attacker. This would be the last goal scored in the game, and the Hawks would leave Carolina with a 3-1 victory.

My picks for 3 stars:

★★★ Andrew Shaw, F, CHI (2 G)

★★ Patrick Sharp, LW, CHI (1 G (GWG), 1 A)

★ Corey Crawford, G, CHI (43 SV, 1 GA)
