UA-59049186-1 Blackhawks 4, Blues 2 - Good if it Goes

Blackhawks 4, Blues 2

Box score (Yahoo)

The Blackhawks got off to a great start against a Blues team coming off their five-day break. Jonathan Toews scored off a great pass from Nick Schmaltz and later in the period, Patrick Kane scored off a great pass from Tazer. Magnus Paajarvi would get one back for St. Louis with just over three to play in the period.

The Blues found their legs in the second and the Hawks went back on their heels a bit. Alex Pietrangelo got the period’s only goal, though there were plenty of great looks. The Blues continued to get the better of the action in the third, though the Hawks were able to pick up their play a bit. Artem Anisimov would give the Hawks the lead with 5:20 to play and the team would be able to hold it, thanks to good defense and great goaltending from the pride of Lemont, Scott Darling. Tanner Kero would add an empty-netter with three seconds to play.

A few things

  • The Hawks picked up Tomas Jurco from Detroit for a third-round pick for a third-round pick. Jurco’s only 24 and has some intriguing skill, so hopefully this is a case like fellow Slovak Richard Panik where he just needs a change of scenery to really take off. If that is the case, Jurco could become a major contributor in time. At the very least, he should provide some nice depth. To make room, Vinnie Hinostroza was sent to Rockford. That seems fine; while Hinostroza wasn’t playing poorly, he wasn’t exactly setting the world on fire, either.
  • Trevor van Riemsdyk had a horrendous game. I’m hoping Stan Bowman can find a decent depth defenseman so both TvR and Michal Kempny aren’t in the lineup every night of the playoffs. That was a major factor in the Hawks’ first-round exit a year ago and while TvR’s gotten better since then, he’s still prone to some serious goof-ups.

My picks for 3 stars

★★★ Patrick Kane, RW, CHI (1 G, 1 A)

★★ Scott Darling, G, CHI (30 SV, 2 GA)

★ Jonathan Toews, C, CHI (1 G, 1 A)
