UA-59049186-1 Blackhawks 4, Canucks 2 - Good if it Goes

Blackhawks 4, Canucks 2

Box score (Yahoo)

The Blackhawks got off to a great start, out-shooting the Canucks 18-9 in the first period and out-scoring them 2-0. First, Richard Panik scored 14:27 in, then Patrick Kane went thin mints on Ryan Miller just over three minutes later. What followed was significantly less great. Once the second period started, the Canucks took control of the action. Some very nice defensive play maintained the Hawks’ lead throughout the second, but just over five minutes into the third, Troy Stecher scored on a power play to cut the Chicago lead to one. Then, 46 seconds later, Bo Horvat beat Corey Crawford to tie the game. This seemed to wake the Blackhawks up, and afterward, they started to get some nice looks, though they were unable to get any to go. That changed when Jonathan Toews picked up a pass that Panik bounced off the boards for him and shot it into a wide-open net to give the Hawks the lead with 1:18 to play. Marian Hossa would add an empty-netter.

A few things

  • I really hope this is the end of the “what’s wrong with Toews” nonsense. Has he been filling up the score sheet? No. Has he had a bunch of help on his line? Absolutely not. On his worst day, there’s nobody in the league I’d trade Tazer for, because nobody can give you exactly what he does on offense, on defense, and in the locker room. There are only two that are close: Patrice Bergeron and Anze Kopitar. Guys like that don’t grow on trees and if you have one, you need to realize how lucky you are. That said, Toews is not a Sidney Crosby-type, where he’s going to lead the league in scoring. His strength is making everyone around him better. But there’s a limit to what he can do.
  • Corey Crawford held the Canucks to two, but left a couple grade A opportunities for the Canucks. Luckily, the defense made the stops.
  • Michal Kempny was benched after the penalty that led to the first Vancouver goal. It was a bad mistake and he had a rough night as a whole, but he’s been mostly good throughout the season. I wouldn’t worry too much about this.

My picks for 3 stars

★★★ Bo Horvat, C, VAN (1 G)

★★ Richard Panik, W, CHI (1 G, 1 A)

★ Jonathan Toews, C, CHI (1 G (GWG), 3 A)
