The Blackhawks got out to a solid start, though it was Vancouver who struck first. Loui Eriksson gave the Canucks the lead on a power play goal 13:49 into the period. The Canucks controlled the action in the second, but were kept from expanding their lead for a while thanks to great goaltending from Scott Darling. Just over seventeen minutes into the period, a Brian Campbell biff on the power play led to a breakaway goal for Bo Horvat. Eighty-four seconds after that, Brandon Sutter scored with assists from both Sedin twins. Neither goal was ideal for Darling, but the defense certainly didn’t do him any favors either time. It was at this point that I sent out a tweet asking if the defense wouldn’t mind showing up for Darling. The defense appeared to have gotten the message during the ensuing intermission, as they really stepped up for the third period. The offense stepped up in a big way as well. Artemi Panarin scored on a great pass from Patrick Kane just under three minutes into the period. Seventy-three seconds after that goal, Vinnie Hinostroza made a great play to light the lamp for the first time in his NHL career. Hinostroza would set up Hartman for the GTG with 4:14 to play. Both teams would have some chances the rest of the way, but neither scored and we would go to overtime. Early in OT, Jonathan Toews beat Jacob Markstrom, but the play was ruled to be offsides. After that, we saw some really exciting hockey with great looks on both ends. Scott Darling came up huge for the Blackhawks multiple times. With just under a minute to play in the period, Marian Hossa would beat Markstrom after a very nice pass from Duncan Keith. This goal would count and the Hawks would complete their comeback and pick up the extra point.

A few things

  • Stick with some variation of this lineup and keep Hinostroza up. For now. I think. I mean, I’ve wavered on this a bunch and I’m not going to be upset with any decision Q makes about the guy unless he’s a healthy scratch in Chicago. He’s really putting it together now. His decisions with the puck in OT weren’t exactly good ones, but he did end up with an assist on the GWG, so whatever, man.
  • Jonathan Toews couldn’t have been much more unlucky. He drew iron on a breakaway, he came very close a couple other times, and then had what would have been the GWG disallowed. Though he didn’t register a point, he had a great game.

My picks for 3 stars

★★★ Scott Darling, G, CHI (24 SV, 3 GA)

★★ Marian Hossa, RW, CHI (1 G (GWG))

★ Vinnie Hinostroza, F, CHI (1 G, 2 A)
