Blackhawks 4, Kings 1 – Recap

The Hawks were back on home ice for the second half of their back-to-back. The Los Angeles Kings were their opponents. The Hawks got out to a good start and got the game’s first goal just over five-and-a-half minutes into the game when Bryan Bickell deflected a shot from Brandon Saad past Jonathan Quick and into the net. The Hawks would continue to get the better chances following the goal. The Hawks would get a power play a little over thirteen-and-a-half minutes in when Robyn Regehr was sent off for hooking Brandon Saad. The Hawks would get a couple nice looks, but no goals, and the score remained 1-0. With just over thirty seconds left in the period, the Kings tied the game when Jake Muzzin threw the puck at the net and it got through Scott Darling’s legs. Darling had been great so far, but that was a save he needed to make. This would be the final goal scored in the period, and after twenty minutes, the game was tied at 1.

The Hawks got off to a great start in the second. They would get a power play 39 seconds into the period after Andrej Sekera was sent off for roughing, and convert just under a minute later on a shot by Duncan Keith. Then they would expand the lead to 3-1 just over a minute after the Keith goal on a goal by Niklas Hjalmarsson. The Kings would get a chance on the power play, their first of the game, 7:12 into the period after Marcus Kruger was sent off for a high stick on Muzzin. The Hawks would be able to kill off the penalty. Both teams would get chances the rest of the period, but neither would score, and after two periods, the Hawks led 3-1.

The third period was much more back-and-forth than the first two. Both teams would get chances, but nobody would score until Marian Hossa beat Quick to expand the Hawks’ lead to 3 with 6:54 to play in regulation. This would be the only goal scored in the period and nobody would make any trips to the penalty box. The Blackhawks would beat the Kings 4-1.

The win over the Kings was especially nice since the Kings are currently 3rd in the wild card race. The win Monday cut the number of points needed to guarantee a playoff berth to 3. Also, Monday, the Blues lost to the Canucks, meaning the Hawks are only one point out of second place.

My picks for 3 stars:

★★★ Duncan Keith, D, CHI (1 G (GWG)

★★ Scott Darling, G, CHI (31 SV, 1 GA)

★ Marian Hossa, RW, CHI (1 G, 1 A)
