Blues 2, Blackhawks 1 – Recap

For the second time this week, the Hawks took on the St. Louis Blues. This time, though, the game took place at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. For most of the first period, we saw back-and-forth hockey, with neither team being able to score. The Hawks got the game’s first power play 17:26 into the period when Kevin Shattenirk was sent off for slashing Brandon Saad. The Hawks power play continued to struggle, and came up empty for the first 1:57, at which point Kris Versteeg was sent off for an illegal check on Alex Pietrangelo. Neither team would score in the three seconds of 4-on-4 play, nor in the first 34 seconds of St. Louis power play time that followed, and after twenty, the teams were tied at 0.

The Hawks were able to kill off the remainder of the Versteeg penalty to start the second. The Hawks went to the power play 3:22 into the second when Zbynek Michalek was sent off for hooking. The Hawks again struggled and came up empty on the man advantage. The Hawks would go back to the penalty kill 8:42 into the period when Bryan Bickell was sent off for tripping. The Hawks would be able to kill off the penalty and get a couple shots in the process. With 3:39 left in the period, David Rundblad was sent off for a high stick on Jori Lehtera that drew blood, meaning Rundblad would be in the penalty box for four minutes. The Blues scored 49 seconds in after a shot by Pietraneglo ended up behind Corey Crawford and Dmitrij Jaskin tapped it in. Since the goal came in the first two minutes of the Rundblad penalty, the Blues would get another two minutes on the man advantage. The Hawks would be able to kill the remainder of the penalty off. Nobody scored in the remainder of the period, and after forty, it was 1-0 Blues.

The Hawks would get a couple chances in the first half of the third, but nothing found the back of the net. The Hawks would go to the penalty kill just over nine-and-a-half minutes into the third after Crawford was whistled for a high stick. The Hawks would be able to kill off the penalty. The Blues would expand the lead to 2-0 on a goal by Paul Stastny 14:05 into the third. Just under fifteen-and-a-half minutes into the period, we would go to 4-on-4 play after Versteeg and Steve Ott were both sent off for roughing. The Hawks would cut the lead to one with 2:39 to play when Andrew Shaw put the rebound of a Teuvo Teräväinen shot past Jake Allen and into the net. The Hawks would be unable to tie the game, even after pulling Crawford for the extra attacker, and would fall to the Blues 2-1.

My picks for 3 stars:

★★★ Jake Allen, G, STL (21 SV, 1 GA)

★★ Andrew Shaw, F, CHI (1 G)

★ Paul Stastny, C, STL (1 G (GWG))
