After a pretty even first period, save for the Blackhawks power plays, the Blues mostly controlled the action in the second and third. The Hawks hung on to on 1-0 lead for a good amount of the third, but a stupid too many men penalty gave the Blues a power play on which they tied the game. A not-so-good Ehrhoff holding penalty gave the Blues another power play on which they would take the lead. The Hawks would tie it late on a goal by Panarin set up by Kane after pulling Crawford for the extra attacker. Nobody would break the tie in regulation, and the game would go to overtime. Both teams would manage two shots in overtime, but neither would score, and for the first time this season, 5 minutes of 3-on-3 would not settle a Hawks OT game. (The Hawks’ other shootout came after an OT period where penalties kept the game from ever actually being 3-on-3.) Both goalies gave up a bad one in the shootout, but in the end, Crawford got beat and Turbo hit the post to give the Blues the extra point.
Also of note, the Hawks signed Marcus Kruger to a 3-year, $9.25 million extension yesterday. $3.083M is kind of a big cap hit for a fourth-liner on a team up against the cap, but Kruger does bring a lot to the team. In the short term, this may not bode well for the Hawks’ chances of re-signing Shaw. I like Shaw, but Ryan Hartman should be able to fill his role pretty well if the Hawks can’t re-sign him. Looking ahead a year, don’t be shocked if Kruger is traded after the 2016-17 season, when the Hawks need to pay Turbo and Panarin.
My picks for 3 stars:
★★★ Troy Brouwer, RW, STL (1 G)
★★ Andrew Ladd, LW, CHI (1 G)
★ David Backes, C, STL (1 G)
