Hawks-Lightning Recap

The Blackhawks went 2-2-0 on the week, losing the first and last and winning the two in the middle. The efforts against the Bruins and Lightning were subpar to say the least, although it was at least somewhat understandable against the Lightning, as it was the second game of a back-to-back.

The Hawks lost Patrick Kane for about three months as he suffered a broken clavicle from a cross-check into the boards from Alex Petrovic on Tuesday. The only silver lining here is that putting Kane on long-term injured reserve freed up $6.3 million in cap space for the Hawks; expect them to take full advantage of it.

The trades started Thursday for the Hawks when they shipped Rockford Icehogs defenseman T.J. Brennan to Toronto in exchange for forward Spencer Abbott, who will be playing in Rockford. Friday, the Hawks acquired defenseman Kimmo Timonen from Phildelphia in exchange for a second-round draft pick in 2015 and a conditional draft pick in 2016. Per Bob McKenzie, the terms of the conditional pick were as follows:

If the Hawks at least reach the Stanley Cup Final and Timonen plays in at least 50% of the games, the Flyers receive the Hawks’ second-round pick in 2016.

If the Hawks reach the Western Conference Final and Timonen plays in at least 50% of the games, the Flyers receive the Hawks’ third-round pick in 2016.

If neither of the above conditions are met, the Flyers receive the Hawks’ fourth-round pick in 2016.

The Flyers did not retain any of Timonen’s salary, so his cap hit for the Hawks will be $2 million. This leaves them with plenty of room to acquire a forward to help fill Kane’s spot. I’m very optimistic that the Hawks will be able to land a top-6 forward by the deadline.

The acquisition of Timonen was a great move for the Hawks, provided that he is healthy. He hasn’t played all year, dealing with blood clots. If he’s healthy and able to shake the rust off, he brings more veteran presence to the locker room and is a perfect fit for the Hawks in terms of style of play.

Blackhawks 3 stars of the week:

★★★ Teuvo Teräväinen (1 G (GWG))

★★ Marian Hossa, RW (3 A)

★ Jonathan Toews, C (3 G)
