Lightning 4, Blackhawks 0 – Recap

Amalie Arena was the site for the Blackhawks’ second game in as many days, this one against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Just over a minute into the contest, the Hawks would get a power play after Ondrej Palat hooked Joakim Nordstrom. The Hawks would get a few really nice looks with the man advantage, but nothing got past Ben Bishop. After a couple Lightning chances, the Hawks would get another power play just under six minutes into the game, this one the result of the Lightning having too many men on the ice. The Hawks struggled to get going on this power play, and Scott Darling had to work harder than Bishop during those two minutes. The Lightning continued to control the action following the successful penalty kill, and, just under nine-and-a-half minutes into the period, would get a power play of their own, one of the four minute variety, after a high stick from Duncan Keith caught Cedric Paquette and drew blood. The Hawks’ penalty kill rose to the occasion and killed off the double minor, limiting the Lightning to only two shots in the process. Killing off the long penalty seemed to energize the Hawks, as they began to pick up their play afterward. They would get a power play a couple minutes later, when Jonathan Drouin was sent off for boarding Patrick Sharp. The Hawks would come up empty on the man advantage, but they made Bishop work to keep the game tied at zero, getting six shots in those two minutes. In the last few seconds of the period, a turnover by Duncan Keith led to the Lightning getting a puck past Darling; however, time had expired by the time the puck crossed the line, and after twenty, we were as we began.

The Lightning controlled the action to start the second period; the Hawks struggled to get anything going. The Lightning would get the first power play of the period just under five minutes in, when Teuvo Teräväinen was sent off for holding. The Hawks were able to kill off the penalty, getting a good look of their own in the process, and the kill again seemed to energize them. However, the Lightning would get the game’s first goal just under eight-and-a-half minutes into the period, when Teräväinen attempted to pass the puck off the boards, but the puck came off his stick at a bad angle and bounced off the net directly to Brian Boyle, who put it past Darling. After some back-and-forth play, the Lightning would get another power play 15:22 into the period, when Duncan Keith made his second trip to the penalty box of the night, this time for interference. The Hawks killed off the power play, but the Lightning held on to the momentum, scoring shortly after the penalty ended when Jason Garrison’s shot was redirected by Steven Stamkos past Darling. Nobody would score for the remainder of the period, and after forty minutes, the Lightning led 2-0.

The Lightning continued to control the action to start the third. The Hawks would get a nice shift in their offensive zone, but Bishop kept his shutout intact. The Lightning would get a power play just under six-and-a-half minutes into the period after Kris Versteeg tripped Nikita Nesterov. The Lightning would convert on this one after some great passing and poor defense led to a tap-in for Ryan Callahan. Following this, the Hawks began to get some better looks, though I think at least some of that was just the Lightning focusing more on defense. With 4:42 to play, the Hawks would go to the penalty kill again, and again it would be Kris Versteeg in the sin bin, again Nesterov drawing the penalty, this time, though, a hook. The Lightning converted in the last few seconds of the power play when Steven Stamkos scored his second goal of the night on a perfect shot that beat Darling glove side. That would be the final goal scored in the game and the Hawks would fall to the Lightning 4-0.

My picks for 3 stars:

★★★ Jason Garrison, D, TB (2 A)

★★ Ben Bishop, G, TB (27 SV, 0 GA)

★ Steven Stamkos, C, TB (2 G)
