UA-59049186-1 Jets 5, Blackhawks 3 - Good if it Goes

Jets 5, Blackhawks 3

Box score (Yahoo)

The Blackhawks coughed up another third period lead and twice allowed multiple goals within a minute of one another. They had their share of chances and got 3, but Connor Hellebuyck kept his team in it long enough for them to mount a comeback. Scott Darling did not come up big. The first pair of goals weren’t his fault. The third goal wasn’t a particularly good one to give up and the last one can’t go in. I’d still go with him over Corey Crawford for now unless you’re sure elite Crow is back, because right now, even Crawford’s good games don’t look very good. Needless to say, the All-Star break is coming at a good time.

A few things

  • The Hawks go into the break up 9 points on Nashville for third, but the concerning thing is their streakiness. Could they get hot and win it all? Yep, sure could. However, it’s far more likely that they get cold and make another first-round exit. The team needs a consistent wing to play with Jonathan Toews and some defensive help certainly couldn’t hurt. Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, and Niklas Hjalmarsson have all been very good-to-great. Brian Campbell, Trevor van Riemsdyk, and Michal Kempny have been just okay-to-mediocre. The thing is – what is there to trade? You can’t keep mortgaging the future while your core continues to age. As it is, after the season, likely Seabs or Crawford has to be traded after the season (hopefully the latter, as I’m far more confident in Darling replacing Crawford than I am in Ville Pokka replacing Seabrook) and they’re going to lose someone to the expansion draft (if I had to guess – TvR, all the more reason to hang on to Seabs). I’d like to see Tyler Motte and Gustav Forsling come up from Rockford after the break and see what they can add. It’s going to take quite a few guys stepping up to get the Hawks back to the top.

My picks for 3 stars

★★★ Patrik Laine, RW, WPG (1 G, 1 A)

★★ Jacob Trouba, D, WPG (2 A)

Andrew Copp, C, WPG (1 G, 1 A)
