Caitlyn Jenner Receives Arthur Ashe Courage Award, Morons Outraged

When Caitlyn Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover came out, there were three ways one could react to it:

  1. Say nothing. This is never a bad option, and was the option I was going to take until Twitter kept feeding me material.
  2. Recognize that this is 2015, being transgender is not a choice, and wish Caitlyn well.
  3. Show your rear end.

Gerry Callahan, to the surprise of no one, chose option #3, sending out this tweet:

Let’s get one thing clear right off the bat: Those who shared this photo were not standing up for the military or showing how patriotic they are. They were using the military to justify their ignorance. The troops deserve better than that.

Nobody is saying the men and women of America’s armed forces are not courageous. In fact, the cover came out after we had just had a national holiday celebrating their courage. We will have another in a little under four months.

Last night, Caitlyn received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs and the idiots were out in full force on Twitter.

There’s an award at the ESPYs, given for perseverance, named after Jim Valvano, who fought, an ultimately died of, cancer. This year, it went to Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Devon Still’s daughter, Leah, who is fighting cancer. There is also the Pat Tillman Award for Service, so sit down.

What agenda? Accept people for who they are? You just said you don’t have a problem with people living as a different sex, so what are you upset about?

Accepting people for who they are is just a liberal idea? Conservatives can’t grasp that concept? Someone may want to tell Caitlyn Jenner this, since she’s a Republican. And if ESPN is so liberal, why did they just let Keith Olbermann go while continuing to give Chris Broussard a platform to spew utter nonsense and call it Christianity?

What Caitlyn Jenner did absolutely took courage. To come out and say “This is who I am,” knowing she would face hate and ridicule took a lot of guts. And Caitlyn has been nothing but classy throughout this process. In her acceptance speech last night, she said

“If you want to call me names, make jokes, doubt my intentions, go ahead. Because the reality is, I can take it. But for the thousands of kids out there coming to terms with who they are, they shouldn’t have to take it.”

To be honest, I understand why someone may doubt her intentions here. After all, we’re talking about a celebrity whose glory days were almost four decades ago and the most noteworthy thing she had done in the interim was be a supporting character on a couple reality shows. But someone needed to be a role model for everyone out there struggling with who they are.

Fortunately, there were plenty of positive tweets as well:

So, Caitlyn, congratulations on your happiness. I applaud your strength and courage in embracing who you are. And to anyone upset about her receiving the Arthur Ashe award, you are getting upset about the ESPYs, a sports award show put on by a network that, every weekday, televises a 2-hour game of “Who Can Say the Stupidest Thing The Loudest?” between Skip Brainless and Stephen A. Hole. (As stupid as Stephen A. is, Skip is darn-near undefeated.) This same network let Bill Simmons, one of the best writers in the world, sports or otherwise, go, but continues to employ the aforementioned Chris Broussard, a loud, unapologetic bigot, who can only get a story right if Woj reports it first. Grow up.
