The Hawks put together a nice offensive effort and solved Varlamov. He and the Avalanche have given the Hawks trouble in the past, so it was nice to see the Hawks put together a game like this.
Defensively, uh, well, hey how about that offense, huh? The defense was less-than-ideal. The Avalanche got some great looks, and with Darling being rusty, they cashed in on a couple of them, and even a not-so-great look. Yeah, Darling needed to be better. I’m not going to get too down on him over this one, though, because the guy hadn’t played in three weeks and was hung out to dry multiple times by the defense tonight. He had to make some really nice saves. Q needs to play Darling more. Give him a game a week. Over the course of a season, that would add up to 26 starts. I’m sure some people are going to be down on him after this performance, but if Darling keeps going three weeks between starts, when he does see the ice, he’s going to look like this. There’s no substitute for game experience for a goalie.
My picks for 3 stars:
★★★ Erik Johnson, D, COL (1 G, 1 A)
★★ Patrick Kane, RW, CHI (1 G, 2 A)
★ Jonathan Toews, C, CHI (1 G (GWG))
