Blackhawks 4, Jets 3 – Recap

The Hawks spent Sunday night in Winnipeg taking on the Jets. The Jets controlled the action for the first half of the first period, before the Hawks began to pick up their play and get a couple looks of their own. The Hawks would get the game’s first power play 17:41 into the period when former Blackhawk Dustin Byfuglien was sent off for elbowing Andrew Shaw. The Hawks would convert on the power play and get the game’s first goal when Andrew Shaw put a loose puck behind Ondrej Pavelec eighteen-and-a-half minutes in. Neither team would score in the last 1:30 and after twenty, the Hawks lead 1-0.

A little over a minute into the second period, the Hawks went back to the power play, this time the result of Mark Stuart covering the puck with his hand. The Hawks would be unable to score on the power play and less than a minute after their power play ended, they would go to the penalty kill after Niklas Hjalmarsson was sent off for elbowing Mark Scheifele. The Jets would convert when a shot by Byfuglien was deflected up by Corey Crawford and landed in the net behind him just over four-and-a-half minutes into the period. The Hawks would get another chance on the power play 6:10 into the period when Tobias Enstrom was sent off for tripping Marian Hossa. The Hawks would not score during the 5-on-4, but the Jets would, catching the Hawks in a change, with Blake Wheeler putting the puck behind Crawford after Crawford dropped down way too early, allowing Wheeler to simply skate around him and shoot at the open net. The Hawks would tie the game with 3:42 remaining in the second on a redirect by Brad Richards, the game’s first even strength goal. With 2:20 left in the period, the Jets would get another power play after Marian Hossa was sent off for hooking. The Jets were able to convert near the end of the power play, with Byfuglien scoring his second goal of the night. This would be the last goal scored in the period, and after forty, the Hawks trailed 3-2.

Early in the third, we saw back-and-forth action before the Jets went to the power play just after four minutes into the period. Brad Richards would be the Blackhawk in the penalty box, sent off for hooking. The Hawks were able to kill off the penalty. With 13:33 left in the period, Patrick Sharp scored on a breakaway to bring the game to a 3-3 tie. Over the next ten minutes, the Hawks played well, but were unable to take the lead. With 3:45 to play, the Hawks would head to the penalty kill after Michal Roszival was sent off for tripping. The Hawks would be able to kill off the penalty. With thirty seconds to play, the Hawks took the lead when Jonathan Toews tipped a shot from Hjalmarsson past Pavelec. Pavelec would line up in position to get off the ice quickly following the faceoff, but he would be unable to do so, and the Jets would be unable to score. Blackhawks win 4-3.

My picks for 3 stars:

★★★ Patrick Sharp, LW, CHI (1 G (GTG))

★★ Dustin Byfuglien, F/D, WPG (2 G)
