Blues 2, Blackhawks 1 – Recap
- Updated: April 6, 2015
While the Cubs were taking on St. Louis’ baseball team on the North Side, the Hawks were taking on the city’s hockey team on the West Side. The Hawks got out to a good start, but committed the game’s first penalty. Corey Crawford was whistled for delay of game after shooting the puck over the glass exactly midway through the first. The Hawks would be able to kill off the penalty. The Hawks struck first when Kris Versteeg received a great pass from Marian Hossa and put it past Jake Allen 14:12 in. This would be the only goal scored in the period, and after one, the Hawks led 1-0.
The Hawks would get their first power play of the game 1:14 into the second when Alex Pietrangelo was sent off for a slash on Jonathan Toews. They wouldn’t get to use the whole power play though, as Andrew Shaw was sent off for charging just over a minute into the Hawks’ man advantage. Neither team would score during the 4-on-4 play and the Hawks would be able to kill off the rest of the Shaw penalty. The Blues would get another power play 5:35 into the period when Michal Roszival was sent off for boarding Pietrangelo. The Blues would tie the game 32 seconds into the power play on a goal by David Backes. The Blues would take the lead 15:12 into the period on a goal by Olli Jokinen. The Hawks would get a power play 17:21 into the period after Jay Bouwmeester was sent off for hooking Patrick Sharp. The Hawks would get a couple nice looks, but no goals. Nobody would score in the 39 seconds that followed, and at the second intermission, the Blues led 2-1.
The Hawks got a good deal of chances in the third as they attempted to tie the game. They would be unable to do so though, even after pulling Crawford in favor of the extra attacker. Nobody would go to the penalty box and nobody would score in the third, and the Hawks would fall to the Blues 2-1. St. Louis overtook Nashville in the standings with the win, so with three games to play, the Hawks trail the Predators by two points for second place and the Blues by 3 for first.
My picks for 3 stars:
★★★ Olli Jokinen, C, STL (1 G (GWG))
★★ Corey Crawford, G, CHI (31 SV, 2 GA)
★ Jake Allen, G, STL (38 SV, 1 GA)
