Jeremy Colliton is out as head coach of the Blackhawks. He was officially fired Saturday, the three-year anniversary of the day he got the job. He deserved to be fired for quite some time now, but as long as Stan Bowman was around, that wasn’t going to happen. Colliton had no business in the job in the first place: his coaching experience consisted of four years as head coach of Mora IK in Hockeyallsvenskan, the second-tier league in Sweden. The team won promotion to the SHL in Colliton’s last year there, at which point Colliton left to take the job as head coach of the Rockford IceHogs. Colliton spent one year in Rockford, leading the team to the conference finals, before being promoted to Blackhawks head coach after Joel Quenneville was fired. In three full seasons, he mustered one playoff appearance and wouldn’t have even had that were it not for the play-in tournament created by the pandemic. He was never anything more that Bowman’s puppet and it always seemed like when, not if, he’d be fired once Bowman was gone. It seemed like Colliton might last the year given the vacancies in the Blackhawks front office, but after a dismal loss Friday to the Jets that featured a flat-out appalling effort, interim GM Kyle Davidson canned Colliton Saturday. Derek King will serve as the interim coach and it sounds like he is very much just an interim coach barring something miraculous happening and this team putting together a big run.
