Super Sophomores -Break out year

College football is here and if you don’t already know, here are the next great players. Get to know them now because these are your future stars and first round draft picks. Expect more dominating performances by these guys.

1. Calvin Ridley -WR, Alabama

Ridley stepped on the scene for ‘Bama last season and people quickly forgot how great Amari Cooper was. As a true freshman, he stepped in as a the No. 1 wide out, catching 89 passes for 1,045 yards and 7 touchdowns. Just to speak on how great those numbers were: Cooper caught 58 balls for 999 yards and 11 Tds. Cooper’s best game was against Michigan State game in the playoffs where he went off for 8 catches, 138 yards and 2 TDs. He looked human for once against Clemson in the title game because he was a non factor. I expect him to use that motivation for a 1,300 yard season.

2. Christian Kirk -WR, Texas A&M

Kirk is quite possibly the best all around player in the country (offensively) and that’s saying a lot. The A&M offense was complete dog shit towards the end of the season with their QB woes. Kirk had 80 catches for 1,009 yards and 7 TDs. He’s also a great return man; he took two punts to the crib in his first two college games. I expect A&M to use him in a Percy Harvin role. He’s too talented to not have at least 15-20 touches a game. If A&M’s QB situation works in their favor, Kirk could have an even bigger year.

3. Josh Rosen – UCLA, QB

The very hardest thing to do in college football is becoming a starting QB in a power conference as a true freshman. That’s exactly what Rosen did for the Bruins on his way to a 3,669 passing yards and 23 touchdown season. More responsibilities will be placed on his shoulders this season as he loses his top rusher and has to throw the ball more this season. He’s very capable of carrying them to a 9-10 win season. Rosen’s best game was Week 1 vs Virginia where he was 28 for 35, 350 yards and 3 touchdowns. If Rosen can get carry his game through conference match ups, he’ll be right in the mix for the Heisman trophy.

4. Derwin James – Florida State, Safety

THIS IS MY FUCKIN’ GUY. He is already one of my favorite Seminoles ever.  Here’s why:

As a true freshman, James finished with 91 tackles, 10 tackles for losses, 5 sacks and 2 forces fumbles. This kid is a freak of nature. With a mixture of speed and power, he can become a Sean Taylor ( yeah I said it) type enforcer college defender. James will be the leader of the defense and pick up right where he left out dominating in the bowl game.

5. Jabrill Peppers – Michigan, LB/Safety

Peppers is the most versatile player in the nation. You could see him lined up at LB, CB, S, RB or WR and he will make plays at each position. The only non true freshman on my list finished with 45 tackles, 10 pass break ups and 5 TFLs from the safety position. He is moving to OLB this season in a wildcat position where he can react and fly to the football. It will be interesting to see how they use him on offense  because Jim Harbaugh knows he can be their biggest weapon. Can they afford to play him 90+ snaps a game? The hype train is here and if Michigan wants to make a run for the National Championship, he has to be their best player every week.
Honorable Mention:

Malik Jefferson – LB, Texas

Lamar Jackson – QB, Louisville

Sam Hubbard – DE, Ohio State
