Cubs and Yankees Close the Deal
- Updated: July 25, 2016
Cubs Want to Win Now
According to multiple sources, the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees close the deal. Aroldis Chapman will be sent to Chicago for Class A shortstop Gleyber Torres, Billy McKinney, former Yankee Adam Warren and Rashad Crawford. Chapman is 3-0 with a 2.01 ERA and 20 saves for the Yankees after serving a 30-game MLB suspension for domestic violence. Chapman, who is headed to free agency after the season, could be the final piece in the much needed overhaul of the Cubs bullpen.
The Cubs built a huge lead in the National League Central standings, giving them the cushion needed to withstand their mid season slump. In route to 100+ wins for the first time since 1935, the acquisitions of Mike Montgomery, Joe Nathan and now Aroldis Chapman solidify the strength of the bullpen. Although, I personally feel the Yankees got the better of the trade, the Cubs are set up to make some noise come October. The thought of winning the franchise’s first championship since 1908 is much more believable.
Yankees Build for the Future
Gleyber Torres, 19, the Cubs’ top-ranked prospect and No. 15 in baseball according to ESPN. Torres is currently hitting .275 with an OBP of .359. He also has 9 HR and 47 RBI in 94 Games. He has a quick right-handed swing and a mature approach, recognizing pitches well and using the entire field. Once Torres gets stronger and learns to pull pitches more often, he could produce 15 or more homers per season.
Billy McKinney, 21, ranked 5th amongst the Cubs prospects. He is currently hitting .252 with an OBP of .355. He also has quick left-handed swing, tremendous hand-eye coordination and mature approach. He’s a decent athlete with average speed and fringy arm strength. With time, McKinney could become an everyday player.
Rashad Crawford, 22, considered to be the lottery ticket for the Yankees. He averaged .255 with an OBP of .327. Crawford packs little power in his frame for someone who checks in at 6-foot-3, but he offers good speed and has swiped 22 bags in 28 attempts on the season. He’s a work in progress but has a ton of potential.
The Yankees will also be getting Adam Warren back. Warren spent the last 4 seasons as a Yankee. So Starlin Castro was basically a gift during last off season trade for Warren. In 29 games and 35.0 innings pitched, Warren posted an ERA of 5.91. Although his numbers weren’t ideal, he’s still a valuable asset off the bullpen.
