Hawks – Sharks and the refs Recap
The Hawks went 0-3 on the week, losing home games in regulation to the Sharks, Stars, and at home in overtime to the Ducks.
Notes
Forwards: Bad. Lacked energy almost all week. Panarin missing a couple games with an illness didn’t help, but that was far from the only problem this week. Marian Hossa went down against Anaheim. He’ll be out a couple weekd. The Hawks called up Vinnie Hinostroza to fill the open spot. I would have gone with Dano or Hartman, but good for the local kid. Mark Lazerus continues to bring up Kris Versteeg as a guy the Hawks should consider trading for. He should stop doing that. Of course, he thinks New York pizza is better than Chicago pizza, so consider the source, I guess. Andrew Ladd should be at the top of the list of trade targets. After him, Mikkel Boedker and Teddy Purcell should be next.
Defensemen: Not good, except against San Jose, where the refs took a goal away on a coach’s challenge. Look, I’m all for getting the call right, so I have no problem if review slows games (in any sport) up a little bit (emphasis on little) in order to get the call right. But these guys are reviewing goals, taking forever to do so, and then getting the call wrong. Yet Bettman says the system is close to perfect. Bettman, as per usual, is wrong. Gustafsson was scratched in favor of Svedberg against the Ducks. Hopefully, Gustafsson picks up his play a bit. The Hawks have a real need at 1LW, so if Gustafsson can step up and make the Hawks not need to acquire a defenseman at the deadline, that would be big.
Goalies: Crawford was very good against San Jose and then just kinda meh the rest of the week. Seriously, play Darling more. Having Crawford at his best in the playoffs would be very helpful to the Hawks in making another deep run. Don’t wear him out in the regular season.
Etc.: The 2017 NHL Draft is coming to Chicago. No word on tickets yet.
Blackhawks 3 stars of the week:
★★★ Andrew Shaw, F (2 A)
★★ Jonathan Toews, C (2 A)
★ Brent Seabrook, D (2 G)
