Prospero Ano y Felicidad – Your Weekly Blackhawks Recap
- Updated: January 5, 2016
(Week of 12/27 – 1/1)
The Hawks went 2-1 on the week, losing at home to Carolina, then winning in Arizona and in Colorado in overtime.
Notes
Forwards: Couple of three-point games for Kane. Business as usual there. Desjardins came close to a hat trick against Arizona, just like we all predicted. Danault has been very good. The Hawks traded Jeremy Morin to Toronto for Richard Panik. Panik is not with the team yet due to visa issues, but Q said once he gets here, he’ll be put in a good spot to start out, which kinda sounds like he’ll be playing in the NHL. His time in the NHL to this point has been very meh (19-20-39 in 151 games), but I guess he’s worth a look.
Defensemen: Gustafsson has looked good thus far, making me think Stan Bowman should try to trade for a wing, rather than a defenseman. The Hawks’ have a trio of defensemen as good as any in the league in Keith, Seabrook, and Hjalmarsson. TvR has been fine as the #4 guy. Gustafsson has looked more than competent, and you could do a lot worse than Scuderi/Rozsival as your #6 D-man.
Goalies: Neither Crawford nor Darling was particularly good. Darling had the excuse of not having played in three weeks, which begs the question: “Why did Darling go three weeks without playing?” I have said time and time again here and on Twitter that the backup needs to play games to stay game-ready. You can’t truly simulate games in practice. Give Darling one start a week. That adds up to 26 starts this year. 56 for Crawford is plenty, especially since Q depends on him to be the workhorse through the playoffs. And I bet if Darling played more, he’d look better when he plays. If he keeps on not playing for weeks at a time, he’ll look rusty when he does finally see the ice, like he did against Colorado.
Blackhawks 3 stars of the week:
★★★ Jonathan Toews (2 G (1 GWG), 1 A)
★★ Patrick Kane, RW (2 G, 4 A)
★ Andrew Desjardins, F (3 G (1 GWG))
