Still Streaking! – Your Weekly Blackhawks Recap
- Updated: January 20, 2016
(Week of 1/10 – 1/16)
The Hawks went 4-0 on the week, improving their win streak to 10 games, defeating the Avalanche and Predators at home and the Canadiens and Maple Leafs on the road.
Notes
Forwards: The top two lines have been very good as of late. Kane was on fire, with two goals against Colorado and a hat trick in Toronto. The bottom two have been good enough. As good as Dylan Larkin (Go Blue!) has been in Detroit, I don’t see how Panarin’s not the favorite for the Calder right now. Hossa’s on a bit of a hot streak. Bickell’s back in Rockford, to the surprise of nobody. He is why you don’t give out big contracts based on one good postseason and little else. The Hawks could buyout his contract, but that would carry a $2 million cap hit into the 2017-18 season and I’m thinking cap space is going to be tight then as it is, with Panarin, Turbo, Dano, Gustafsson, and Pokka all RFAs the preceding off-season. (I know Pokka’s not playing in the NHL right now, but Rozsival’s getting up there and years and a UFA this off-season and Scuderi’s also getting up there in years and is a UFA next off-season.) Spending $2 million in cap space in 2017-18 for Bickell to not be there seems like a bad idea. Seriously, Stan, you’re gonna need that $2 million. Don’t do it. This off-season, though, Shaw, Kruger, Rasmussen, and Danault are all RFAs. Having Bickell in Rockford but on the books for $3 million and change next year is also less than ideal. The best solution here, in my opinion, it try to trade him again. Nobody’s going to pick him up for $4 million, but I think someone might for, say, $2 million.
Defensemen: Very good. Their play has as much to do with the Hawks’ winning streak as anything. They’ve done a great job of limiting chances for opponents.
Goalies: Crawford was okay against Colorado and very good against Nashville and Montreal. Darling had a great outing against the Maple Leafs. See what happens when he doesn’t go three weeks between starts?
Blackhawks 3 stars of the week:
★★★ Marian Hossa, RW (2 G, 2 A)
★★ Jonathan Toews, C (2 G, 3 A)
